Lenten Study Groups
Wednesdays, March 4 – April 1
Supper begins at 6pm. Prayer and Study Groups begin at 6:30pm.

Starting Wednesday, March 4 after our covered dish supper at 6pm, we’ll begin a short series of 5-week study groups. Whether you’ve been at UBC for years or are just finding out about us, these groups are a great way to get to know one another, learn about UBC, and grow in your faith at the same time. We have three groups gathering this winter. Here’s more about each group:

Immerse: Messiah
We will continue reading through the New Testament together, picking up where we left off in February. If you weren’t with us in February, feel free to join in now. Each week we will have a reading plan to follow individually, then come together as a group for honest, communal conversation. Using the Immerse Bible special reader’s edition, we will read through scripture in a new way without the clunky chapter and verse numbers, columns, and headings.

The Cross and the Lynching Tree
Theologian and scholar James Cone remarks that the cross upon which Jesus died and the lynching trees of the Jim Crow era are linked. This book takes a deeper look at each of them that offers ways to reflect on the power and paradox within them and the story of our faith in a crucified and risen savior. This Lent, we’ll take deeper look and create an opportunity to reflect more deeply, as people of faith, on the symbols and stories of our scriptures and societies. You can pick up your copy of Cone’s book in all formats at Orbis Books, Amazon, or your favorite bookseller.

Simplifying The Soul: Lenten Practices to Renew Your Spirit
Sometimes things get too complicated. Sometimes we need to slow down, reorient, and reflect. In her practical study of Lenten practices, Paula Huston offers us ways to do just that throughout this season. She looks at ways we can renew our bodies, minds, schedules, relationships and more. Join us for a conversation about spiritual practices and renewal during Lent.
