Sunday School at UBC offers many opportunities for Christian growth and development. Our program begins with our earliest learners in the nursery and continues through our adult classes. Our children’s classes explore a Montessori method of Christian education called Godly Play. Our youth class varies in topic. Several adult classes use literature developed by Smyth & Helwys. We also have classes that use various books and other topics chosen by the teacher and class members for study. Although we do have classes that are gender and/or age specific, we also offer many classes that are open to all and have a unique blend of cross-generational members.
At UBC, you are sure to find a place to study, learn, and become a part of a group of caring, Christian friends seeking to learn more about God and how to serve God more fully. We will be glad to help you find a class. Here’s a brief look at each class:
Agape
Teachers: Mo & Dick Conville

Group Make Up: Intergenerational, singles & couples
Curriculum: Topical
This class is discussion based and not afraid of big ideas! They study everything from Marcus Borg to the Sermon on the Mount.
Contemporary
Teacher: Mike Ratliff
Location: Garner 100, Across from Infant Nursery
Group Make Up: Intergenerational, singles & couples
Curriculum: Traditional Bible Study – Smith & Helwy’s Formations
This class enjoys exploring scripture every week and welcomes diverse opinions!
Koinonia
Teacher: Karen Walker
Location: Garner 105
Group Make Up: Intergenerational, singles & couples
Curriculum: Alternate between Bible and book studies
This group appreciates reading a book together like Eugene Peterson’s works and discussing it.
Patience
Teacher: Jan Davis
Location: Garner 104, Across from toddler nursery
Group Make Up: Women only
Curriculum: Traditional Bible Study – Smith & Helwy’s Formations
The Patience class values deep Biblical knowledge and thoughtful conversations.
Justice
Teacher: Beckie Chambers
Location: Garner 201, Upstairs next to youth room
Group Make Up: Singles & Couples on the young-ish side
Curriculum: Reading Between the Lines
This eclectic group is currently studying the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) through a justice lens.
Nursery & Preschool
Teachers: Idella McSwain & Olivia Carter
Location: Garner 101 & 102
Group Make Up: Infants through 2 yr olds
Curriculum: Holy Moley
Ms. Idella & Ms. Olivia have a deep love for our smallest kids and enjoy doing small crafts and teaching about God’s love.
Godly Play
Teachers: Rotate
Location: Garner 200, 202, and 204, Upstairs
Group Make Up: Two classes: 3yr olds through 1st grade and 2nd grade through 6th grade
Curriculum: Godly Play
This is one of the best things our church does! Trained teachers guide children through stories in the Bible inviting them to wonder. Children then have an opportunity to respond through art or play and feasting together.
Youth
Teacher: Ashley Smith
Location: Garner 203, Upstairs Next to Justice Class
Group Make Up: 7th-12th graders
Curriculum: Echo the Story
Youth build on their foundations from Godly Play and deepen their understanding of the essential stories of our faith.
College Students
Teacher: David Walker
Meet on Wednesday nights following our church potluck.
Library
Our church library is open on Sunday mornings. If you are taking a break from formal classes or not ready to dive in just yet, you are welcome to hangout here. There’s usually a puzzle in progress you can assist with and of course plenty to read!
