silverstarJeanette Walls’ new book, The Silver Star (a novel), is now a part of our collection along with her other two books, The Glass Castle (a memoir) and Half Broke Horses (a true-life novel). What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the “guts and intelligence” to get away from her parents, but that she describes them with such deep affection. Her books are stories of triumph against all odds. They are also tales of unconditional love in a family that despite all its faults gave her the determination to live a successful life on her own terms. All three of her books are a “must read.” I recommend that you read them in the order she wrote them. Her characters are survivors and you will find yourself cheering them on!

New wonderful books have also arrived for our children, Lilly’s Big Day by Kevin Henkes, Wolves by Emily Gravett, Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watts, Chato’s Kitchen by Gary Soto, and Move Over, Rover! by Karen Beaumont.

The teachers are so appreciative of gifts to our library that the children will use for a few weeks this summer before they go on the shelves. The Patience Class purchased two copies each of One Bean, The Carrot Seed, And Suddenly It’s Spring, along with a biography of George Washington Carver. The teachers, Jenny, Lida, and Lucy, are using these books along with the Parable of the Sower. Things are actually growing in the classroom.
