Missions

“Christ has no body now but yours; no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” — St. Teresa of Avila

We believe mission involvement is the natural result of a real faith. When our hearts are filled by God, we naturally want to share God’s love with others.

Following Christ’s command to “Go therefore and make disciples,” our church supports missions through our praying, our serving, our going, and our giving. Through summer mission trips, family mission projects, and local mission organizations, our congregation works to serve and share with people and communities in need.

Check out the information below to see how we are involved in our local community, our state, and our world. Join us in being the hands and feet of Christ to a world in need. If you would like more information or to be involved in any of the missions, please click HERE.

Breadbasket

Breadbasket is a food pantry supported by the contributions of University Baptist and 11 other Hattiesburg faith communities. Volunteers from those faith communities distribute food to families in Hattiesburg.

Thames Elementary School Partnership

We strive to be good neighbors to the community at Thames Elementary, just a few blocks south of UBC. A highlight of our work at Thames is the school garden program. Along with planting and harvesting in the gardens, our partnership provides opportunities to tutor, read with children, keep their clothing closet stocked and organized, and participate in school events and teacher appreciation efforts.

Prison Ministry

We take serious Jesus’ calling to minister to those in prison. Our Prison Ministry committee keeps the church aware of prayer needs among our friends in prison, encourages regular note writing, and publishes a newsletter that many of our prison friends help write.

Alternative Gift Fair

This is an annual event in which UBC members are given the opportunity to make donations in the name of a friend or family member to various local and international social service agencies. Instead of a traditional Christmas gift, those friends and family are sent cards that indicate a gift has been given in their name. Who really needs another sweater anyway, right?

Disaster Relief

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, UBC became a regional hub for the disaster relief efforts of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). We maintain disaster relief equipment and are home to the CBF of Mississippi’s disaster relief trailer. We are thankful for the many ways our CBF family has reached out not only to the members of UBC, but also to our neighbors in Hattiesburg.

Delta Hands for Hope

Through CBF’s Together for Hope initiative, we work alongside the Delta community of Shaw, MS, to strengthen and enhance local community assets related to education, spiritual development, health, and recreation of school-aged children.

Regional Mission Partnerships

We partner with the Great Rivers Fellowship, a new region of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship that connects individuals, churches and partners across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and beyond for collaborative mission and ministry. We are particularly involved with Delta Hands for Hope in Shaw, Mississippi.

National and International Mission Partnerships

We partner with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship to support mission work in North America and around the world. We also provide support to the Baptist World Alliance.
