Back Door Coffeehouse

December 8 Back Door!

Second Friday, December 8 at 7:30 (doors open at 7:00pm)

david.rothFriday, December 8, The Back Door welcomes nationally renowned New Folk Artist DAVID ROTH for his Hattiesburg premier. If you wonder who David is, we’ll just give you a few quotes:

“David has reached our hearts. With voices like his still singing, there’s a certainty that the candle will remain lit, the hope reasserted and the dream still sung…”Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul, & Mary)

“I really dropped my teeth when I heard a song on the radio that I thought was written by Tom Paxton. When I went around looking for the author is when I heard this dynamic, exciting singer-songwriter come forth… his name is David Roth”Dave Sear (on NPR’s Folk Almanac)

“ …one of the best songs I’ve heard in the last 20 years”Tom Paxton on David’s “Nine Gold Medals”

Shout-outs from some of our Back Door artists upon our 25th Anniversary:

“Happy 25, y’all! I’m SO PROUD to know you! Wishing the Back Door 25 more years of Peace, Love, and Music!”  Kate Campbell, Nashville

“‘Listening room’ and ‘music venue’ only begin to describe the Back Door Coffeehouse. To capture the essence of this place, you need words such as nuanced, hospitable, thoughtful, generous, and appreciative. And, of course, open because their doors are always just that. Congrats on 25 years, and thanks for treating your artists so well!”Claire Holley, Los Angeles

“Hello to all the folks who come to the Back Door to celebrate the joy music brings to life of beautiful melody and lyric. Happy 25th Anniversary!”Chuck Cannon, Nashville

“To everyone at The Back Door, a very, very Happy 25 years of bringing the music to the people! Thank you for making me feel a part of your family. Woohoo!”Sally Barris, Nashville

Great big congratulations on your 25th anniversary, and huge thanks once again for the warm welcome, wonderful hospitality, and lovely atmosphere. About the Back Door Coffeehouse

Back Door Coffeehouse logoUniversity Baptist Church has served as the host of the monthly Back Door Coffeehouse since 1992. The Back Door is a unique ministry to the community where local writers, musicians, and poets are featured in an intimate and relaxed candlelight and coffee atmosphere. The Back Door is typically held on the first Friday of every month from 7:30 – 9:30P.M. There is no charge for admission, although donations for soft drinks, candy, coffee, and other costs are appreciated. Periodically, various nationally-known musicians and performers are secured by donations from patrons and neighborhood sponsors for special concerts to promote this unique artistic venue to a larger audience. Such acclaimed recording artists as Kate Campbell, Pierce Pettis, Spooner Oldham, Tom Kimmel, Caroline Herring, Tracy Grammer, and Steve Forbert have graced our stage. But we are also proud to promote the talents of our own local and regional musicians and writers. Our performers often portray a wide variety of ideas and styles. However, in supporting the open and honest artistic expression of our neighbors, there will, at times, be some readings neither intended nor appropriate for children. Childcare is provided for parents of young children without charge. If you wish to receive our monthly Back Door Coffeehouse e-mail messages, please contact us at

FRIDAY, MARCH 2 is our 26th anniversary Back Door! We'd like to welcome to the stage NO STRANGERS. Several of our Columbian student friends from the music department at USM, and who are a long way from home, have asked to perform as a way to express their thanks to all the folks in the community and to UBC for seeking their fellowship and making them welcome.
